Why I'm changing the name of this site from Psychophysical to The Art of Conscious Control
Starting a new project
Hello, it’s Kevin.
I’m changing the name of this site from Psychophysical to The Art of Conscious Control.
Why? It’s time to build something more focussed - and do the thing I’ve been avoiding for ages. “You don’t choose the task, the task chooses you.” Turns out this is true, but they don’t tell you how annoying this is from the inside :)
Anyway, here goes…
The Mission
The goal is to establish “The Art of Conscious Control” as the West’s own mind-body tradition.
Theory, practice, history, and philosophy.
Essays, videos, podcast, book club.
Private lessons, teacher training, some kind of real world ‘guild.’
When I wrote The Quest for a Western Mind-Body Practice two years ago, I assumed it would be the first of an ongoing series. Instead, I published just one small, half-hearted essay a few months later and then went dark.
But I kept writing, thinking, researching, experimenting; and the outcome of this quest has been The Art of Conscious Control. This is much more than a mind-body practice: it’s a tradition, a discipline, a practical philosophy, an art of living.
The problem with the phrase “mind-body practice,” and the current site name “Psychophysical” is that they both imply this is yet another somatic, embodiment, calm, touchy-feely type of practice - to be judged subjectively: does it feel good?
Whereas conscious control requires the ability to override your immediate feelings and work to a plan. So any art of conscious control must be: no-nonsense, dynamic, technical, practical, measurable - to be judged objectively: is it good?
But more on these principles and methods in future essays and videos. This will be a long, open-ended project with many twists and turns.
You can of course unsubscribe below if this isn’t your thing - or maybe you forgot you had subscribed in the first place, no worries.
But if this is your thing: look out for the next newsletter, which will be published under the new name: The Art of Conscious Control.
The URL will also change to artofconsciouscontrol.com
Cheers,
Kevin.
